West 1970

Gary Doss graduated from West High in 1970. He received a bachelor of science degree in biology from Northeast Missouri State University and a doctor of osteopathy degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Normandy Osteopathic Hospitals. He lives in Fort Gratiot, MI.

Gary is an orthopedic surgeon with Orthopedic Associates in Port Huron, Mich. and has practiced medicine in that area since 1983. He is certified by the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and has served as the president of his local medical society.

High school athletics is a passion of Gary's. He played football at West High and Northeast Missouri and now uses his talents to the benefit of his local teams. For twenty years he has worked with the local medical society to provide free athletic screenings for approximately 1,200 students a year. Gary also donates his time as team physician for two local high school football teams, having not missed a home game since 1983. He takes time to speak to athletes about safety and has purchased football helmets for a local team.

The community and his peers have shown appreciation to Gary for all that he does. He received the "Friend of Kids" award from the Port Huron Area School District and the Community Service Award for St. Clair County from the Michigan State Medical Society. Gary has also been honored with the St. Louis Hospital Association Humanitarian Award and by the Time Herald Community Service program.

Gary's involvement in football also includes the development and direction of a football camp for seventh- through ninth-graders in the local school district. The camp's aim is to help players prepare for high school. More than 100 student athletes from the surrounding area attend the camp.
