While at Northwest Missouri State, Steve was named All-MIAA linebacker twice and led the team in tackles for three consecutive years. He had a short NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys but was forced to quit playing due to injury. Upon leaving football, he began his broadcasting career in Billings, Montana. He also worked in El Paso, Texas, and Hartford, Conn. before coming to Channel 4.

Steve has won six Emmy awards, including best sportscaster honors in 1999, 2001 and 2003. Community involvement includes service as the honorary chairperson for the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk and the St. Louis Crisis Nursery golf tournament. Steve also serves on the board of directors for the Tom Lombardo chapter of the National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame.

For Steve, attending Parkway was a very positive experience, "I remember debating whether to stay at Parkway North or attend a private high school beginning in ninth grade. I made the decision to stay in Parkway and I've never regretted it. The education I received prepared me for college and my coaches prepared me for success on the football field. Denny Staub in football and Bob Robben in baseball were great mentors. And, I had great friends and teammates. Parkway was the right choice for me."
